SEA-15 kayak: Designed for the smaller paddler. Designed by the retired architect and long time paddler, Jonathan Rose, this kayak is made for rough water play and touring.
The SEA-15 is designed for paddlers between 120 to 140 pounds (54 – 64 kg). Figure assume dressed paddlers, with cargo and a boat weight of 35 lbs (16 kg).
From the designer, Jonathan Rose:
Due to being a smaller paddler, I have spent many hours researching and trying lower volume kayaks. And I have owned two of the best: the Impex Mystic, an early plastic one now out of production, and the Mariner Elan. The Mystic lacked speed and the Elan, also no longer made, required a sea sock and float bags, a little problematic to handle, at least for me.
Consequently, about two years ago, I began to think about a rough water sea kayak for my weight. I wanted a hull that would sit in the water right at the design water line and not be riding high, or out of trim bow high, which is sometimes the case. I also did not want too narrow a kayak but one that would be comfortable in challenging conditions if need be.
I very naturally turned to Dan Caouette who owns Clear Stream Custom Water Craft for help and guidance. Dan had already built a modified Bjorn Thomasson Njord for me to use in ocean racing. Beyond being a very talented builder, Dan has a vast knowledge of kayak design and the ability to do the drawings including all the calculations and necessary modifications.
The SEA 15 is the result of this collaboration.
It is offered either as plans or pre-cut forms for home builders. It can be also be custom built by CSCWC.
Design elements include a moderately swede form hull with the widest part of the kayak at the back of the seat. This is also the flatter section of the hull with more evident chine to provide initial comfort and solid secondary stability. The performance goal here is to enable confident leaned and sweep turns in wind and waves.
The hull from cockpit to bow is rounded. This, combined with some use of the adjustable skeg, allows for good downwind runs without broaching or plowing through waves.
There is a fair amount of rocker for maneuverability. Despite this rocker, the kayak is generally low volume especially in the stern.
Finally, the kayak is designed to have a reasonable amount of speed in the hands of a fit paddler. It is designed for good glide and the small amount of wetted surface in the water reduces drag.

Distribution of these plans in any form is expressly prohibited.
Strip Kit – Forms Only
Forms are available for internal and external strong backs (depending on the design). They are precision cut on either particle board or MDF. We do not sell electronic versions of our plans. They are full templates for all molds, end stems, bulkheads and cockpit. You will need to supply the strong back and strips.
