Design Statement

The design is named after the cold, clear brook that runs through the family property in Millsfield, NH.  Family members often fish it for brook trout.  This little solo canoe was designed for my wife’s father as a retirement present and will be used mostly for hunting and fishing trips in northern New Hampshire and western Maine.  He wanted a very light, short and stable canoe for one person that could be portaged into remote ponds and lakes.

The initial inspiration was the solo double-bladed canoe that Rushton designed: the Wee Lassie.  Short and low, they can be built very light.  He wanted to sit/kneel higher up and use a single-bladed canoe paddle though so  designing a new hull with similar dimensions.  Slightly wider with more stability.  The hull was made flatter with less curvature at the bilge.  The sides were raised higher to hold the seats.

It was originally designed as a symmetric hull with a length of 15 feet.  The last two feet were removed to create the transom stern and then the remaining hull was massaged to restore some performance lost by removing the stern.  This transom stern allows attachment of a small electric trolling motor without unnecessary brackets.

Paddling a canoe with a single blade in a straight line can be a challenge.  With the transom stern this one acts like a 15′ canoe instead of a 13′ one.  I maintained the original rocker to keep most the maneuverability and added a small, fixed skeg at the stern.

Finally, the canoe is designed to have a reasonable amount of speed.  It is designed for good glide and the small amount of wetted surface in the water reduces drag.

Plans

Available for external strongbacks. They include full-size sheets with full templates for all molds (not nested!), end stems, and cockpit. Full hydrostatics and resistance calculations available.

Purchasing these plans entitles you to build one boat only for your own personal use.  If you are interested in building more than one boat from the same plans a modest fee is required for each new boat.  Please inquire concerning any commercial interests.

Distribution of these plans in any form is expressly prohibited.

Strip Kit – Forms Only

Forms are available for internal and external strong backs (depending on the design).  They are precision cut on either particle board or MDF.   We do not sell electronic versions of our plans. They are full templates for all molds, end stems, bulkheads and cockpit.  You will need to supply the strong back and strips.
