Touring, fishing and hunting canoe for two paddlers.
The Prospector 13 is a shorter version of the venerable Prospector canoe originally designed by the Chestnut Canoe Company. Ours is a light, short and stable canoe for two person. It is easily handled both on-shore and in the water with good maneuverability through whitewater and wilderness, with capacity to carry substantial loads. It’s perfect for hunting, fishing, photography, camping and touring around lakes and rivers. It is lighter, quicker, and more maneuverable than most fishing kayaks while holding more gear, keeping it all readily accessible.
We built the original for Robert & Jackie in Florida:
I thought I would send you an update.
We just had the canoe out with some friends on the Ichetucknee River, a beautiful clear water spring fed river about 30 min from our home here in Gainesville. The water temp is 73 deg or greater year round. The river is created by a spring and cool enough that there are no alligators.
There is a pretty good flow to the river. We put in about 3 miles from the spring head and paddled upstream.
Honestly I was amazed. The first thing I noticed was that in the middle of the river with the bow pointed upstream the boat held its position. It was an amazing thing. No paddling just sitting in the river pointing upstream, with my wife in front and me in the back seat. It’s like the water was not even knowing we were there.
We paddled up stream for an hour or so and then let the river bring us back. We all had a great time. I am including some action pics… Enjoy!
It is offered either as plans or pre-cut forms for home builders or can be custom built by CSCWC.
The Chestnut Canoe Company built the original Prospector canoe to be the “workhorse of the North.” It met the specific needs of the prospector – good maneuverability through whitewater and wilderness, with capacity to carry substantial loads.
The 13-footer has the same flattened, shallow arch hull with its fullness carried into the bow and stern, good depth amidships to maintain freeboard and deepened ends to keep paddlers and gear dry. The rocker has been reduced on this version for better straight-line tracking. rockered keel-line makes it very maneuverable in whitewater. Still a great all-round canoe for two people… just a little smaller.
